David Stern is showing his cards.
The commissioner of the NBA, Stern said October 21 that the league wants the amount paid to players reduced by at least $750 million. According to deputy commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA is currently spending $2.1 billion per year on player salaries and benefits.
“We would like to get profitable, have a return on investment,” Stern said. “There’s a swing of somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 (million) to $800 million that we would like to change. That’s our story and we’re sticking with it.”
League owners and representatives for the players have been haggling for months over the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires June 30.
