Zack Greinke is heading north.
In a deal made official December 19, the Kansas City Royals sent Greinke, Yuniesky Betancourt and reportedly $2 million to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for shortstop Alcides Escobar, center fielder Lorenzo Cain, reliever Jeremy Jeffress and the team’s top pitching prospect, Jake Odorizzi.
“This trade is a credit to our scouting and player development staff as their hard work and judgment provided us the talented prospects that Kansas City will be receiving,” said Doug Melvin, Milwaukee’s general manager. “I also appreciate the support of ownership in making this deal.”
The trade comes right after Greinke, who won the American League Cy Young in 2009, changed agents.
Escobar appeared in 145 games for the Brewers in 2010, finishing with 57 runs, ten triples, 41 RBI, ten steals and a .235 batting average.
Cain, 24, hit .306 and had 11 doubles in 43 games with Milwaukee.
