Sports Opportunity at Department of State

**Supervisory Sports Program Officer, Department of State. This position is located within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of Citizen Exchanges, SportsUnited Division (ECA/PE/C/SU). ECA’s mission is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange that assist in the development of peaceful relations. Through SportsUnited’s international exchange programs, foreign participants learn about American culture through the lens of sports and have an opportunity to establish relationships with U.S. sports professionals and peers. In turn, American participants are enriched by new cultures and different experiences.
The Supervisory Sports Program Officer will provide expertise and will lead strategy formulation, development and implementation for sports diplomacy at the Department of State. The incumbent will assist and advise senior leadership in defining and analyzing sports programs that advance U.S. policy and public diplomacy goals and efforts around the globe.
Duties: Advises senior management on priority U.S. interests in sports exchanges. Working with relevant State Department bureaus and public diplomacy sections in U.S. embassies and consulates, conceptualizes and develops public diplomacy initiatives, ensuring that exchange programs involving sports effectively promote U.S. foreign policy goals and advance mutual understanding between the United States and other countries. Develops and maintains public/private partnerships with sports leagues (e.g., the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, etc.), the United States Olympic Committee, and major sports diplomacy federations that reach a global audience. Supervises a full-time staff of program specialists and support staff, and interns. Manages the Division’s grant-making responsibility, including oversight of significant, creative and innovative programs in pursuit of the Bureau’s and the Department’s public diplomacy goals and objectives. Oversees funds appropriated to the ECA for sports exchanges, as well as funds transferred to the Bureau from other agencies.
