This position is a contractual position, subject to the terms and conditions of an employment agreement.

The part-time Basketball and/or Kickball Official is responsible for officiating in schedule basketball games and programs sponsored or coordinated by the Parks & Recreation Department. A high level of independent judgment is necessary to be an Official. Officials are under the direction of the assigned Leader/Supervisor. All employees are responsible to the City Manager. This position is Contractual Non-Exempt for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act, as having no significant occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and as Non-Safety Sensitive; the employee is subject to reasonable suspicion, post-accident (incident), return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.


The following duties are illustrative for this position.  The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned. 

  • The Official works indoor or outdoor at a City owned basketball court or designated school site or city owned fields.
  • The Official will be exposed to loud noises, moving participants and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious, cooperative, and productive working relationships with participants including coaches, players, supervisors, and other employees of the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Maintains accurate time sheets and turns them into designated supervisor.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Prior experience in officiating basketball or kickball games is desirable.
  • Ability to learn and follow City policies and regulations.
  • Ability to appear on time for all scheduled games and notify appropriate individuals in advance if unable to work.
  • Ability to see play with sufficient clarity to make accurate decisions.
  • Ability to repeatedly and quickly traverse the court or field to monitor play.
  • Ability to work at least three (3) games in succession.
  • Prefer FHSAA certified or student certification through FHSAA.

  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate promotional skills and leadership.


  • Prior experience in officiating basketball games is required.
  • Basketball Official Certification preferred.


While performing the duties of this Job, the Instructor is regularly required to talk or hear. The Instructor is frequently required to stand and walk. The Instructor is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this Job, the Instructor is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
